LIGHTBOX: On Space, Sound, and Spontaneity

Painting is both a physical and a spiritual act for me. In that sense, my paintings reflect my relationship with the world. Around the time of my 2021 exhibition, I felt very isolated. Living in Germany as a foreigner.

I remember the day I first met Harel Shachal. It was in 2001, back at my University building on 13th Street, NYC. He was walking around restless, going from one practice room to the next, with his black clarinet case on his back.

A friend saw what I’d been up to and then introduced me to the work of William De Kooning. This blew my mind, and my obsession became even deeper. I can’t get enough of painting. I love seeing other people’s work too.

I was drawn to develop badass skills, impress everyone, and find a way to make music no one else would ever have done before. So, as a human, I felt as good and as valuable as my music was. At the moment, it’s all going back to where it came from.

What is fascinating about Oded’s work is that each painting has its own story, its own situation. There is no method, and each time we see a different approach, a completely new scenario. There is something fresh and alive about it.
