What’s special in your opinion about a duet concert?
Avishai: “I love playing in a duet setting and I love listening to duets. It’s the most intimate concert setting you can get where there’s still a conversation going. When listening to a large ensemble with many people it’s harder to follow the conversation between the musicians, as appose to a duet where you can much more easily follow and be a part of this intimacy. It’s the closest in intimacy to a solo performance but here you have still an interaction onstage. “
Your duo album is called “Playing The Room”, can you talk about this idea?
Avishai: “Playing the room is a reaction to the atmosphere and the people around you. Be aware of the situation you’re in and play of that. The music doesn’t stand in emptiness, it’s always in a relashevnship to whoever is perceiving it. Even if there’s no one else other than the two of us, we play for each other and we play the room. It’s not about crowd pleasing or anything like that, it’s about awareness to our environment. “
What is a lesson you have to keep learning over and over?
Avishai: "I guess, to let go. To keep learning that we have no control. Yeah, to let go. Letting go is the hardest thing. It keeps changing, we think if we let go things will fall apart, and some times it’s true. But also, sometimes we need things to fall apart in order to build something new. “
What’s the best way to spend a free day on the road?
Avishai: “For me, I see the value these days in resting. Maybe when I was younger I didn’t see the value in that or needed different things, but now I realise it’s hard work to be on the road. Not only the travel but the playing, with such focus, it’s emotional work. The more honest you play the harder the work, and you feel the toll on your body as well. I like taking a walk, spend a few hours outdoors, sit at a coffee place, look at people. That’s a perfect off day for me.”
