MUSIC – Shirley Brill & Jonathan Aner

We are excited to be hosting a special collaboration between clarinetist Shirley Brill and pianist Jonathan Aner. These two leading Israeli musicians both bring tremendous technique together with deep creativity, offering us music that is rich, moving, and exciting to witness. Working together as the Brillaner duo, they have played together at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, Tonhalle Zürich, Oriental Art Center in Shanghai, and the Beethoven-Haus in Bonn.

Shirley Brill has performed internationally as a renowned clarinet virtuoso. In both large orchestras and small groups, Brill can be recognized by her energetic playing and precise articulation. She has played with orchestras such as the Deutsches Symphonie Orchester and the Symphony Orchestra of the Nationaltheater, among many others.

Jonathan Aner has also played internationally as a soloist and as part of the Brillaner duo and Oberon trio. As a soloist, he has played with renowned orchestras in Israel, Germany, Italy, and China. Informed by his deep knowledge of chamber music, Jonathan Aner’s playing teems with passion, intensity, and a virtuosic technique.

Temptation, craving, and destruction, portrayed by black holes, beautiful women, and addicts, formulate this series of watercolor paintings.

This body of work draws a line between attachment and addiction, between the concrete and the abstract.

AS ABOVE

The void, the bardo of nothingness. Space in another realm.

Weakening of consciousness, or the sensation of post orgasm as little death, la petite mort.

A black hole sucks everything around it, folding time and space.

A black hole is a dark hole; even light can’t escape it.

SO BELOW

A black hole is the Negative Nirvana that hard drug users seek to experience: leaving their bodies behind while they enter the void.

Women, that obscure object of desire.
